KOLOB ARCH

Kolob Arch is located in Southern UT and was formed along an extensive regional joint system which was formed by a combination of regional east-west compressional forces followed by a more recent period of extensional forces associated with the pulling apart of the Basin and Range province.

With a span of 287 feet, a height of 105 feet, and a thickness of 75 feet, the Kolob Arch is one of the world's largest natural arches.

The astonishing stature and unique coloring and architecture of Kolob Arch inspired me to paint this scene.

I’ve added rich light to the red, yellow and orange rocks in the foreground and background as well as an eagle flying overhead seeking to focus attention on the stunning nature of this vista.

The trees, both alive and dead, always add unique variety to such a piece.
