Knockderry Castle is located in Cove, Argyll, Scotland and was purchased in 2022 by my friends, David and Chelom Leavitt, whom are restoring the castle starting from the roof down.
Knockderry Castle was built in 5 phases, the first of which was completed in 1855, and sits above “Loch Long”, an inland ocean waterway.
Royal Navy aircraft carriers and nuclear submarines are seen occasionally in Loch Long.
Roe Deer often roam the property and feast on the Rhododendrum bushes.
The former owner lost the castle to foreclosure, as a result of a 22 year long dispute over an approximate $270 (US currency value) business debt she insisted she had paid.
It has a very interesting history and restoration process which you can learn more about on Instagram or on the Leavitt’s blog: “whatthehelldidwedo.com". -
I am a friend of the owners, David and Chelom Leavitt, and was inspired to paint the Castle after following their blog and posts after purchase. The thoughts of owning a castle, let alone restoring it, became a pass time for me and, after consulting the owner, I decided to paint it.
This painting required many hours of detailed work. I didn’t keep track of the time I spent on this rendition, but after considering the time accounting for my Payson Utah Temple Painting, I would estimate this piece took 75 or more hours total to complete.
This is my most detailed painting yet requiring the use of a ruler throughout the painting process for every line painted.
I imagined myself actually being there while painting this magical structure and landscape and I feel a great sense of accomplishment at it’s completion.
The reward was reading the very complementary comments of the owner upon his seeing the completed product. -
